GTA 6 compresses Florida instead of copying it
The map, wildlife, research and omissions reveal how Rockstar is selecting what defines Leonida.

The most important decision behind Leonida may not be making a map twice as large, but refusing to reproduce Florida literally. Read together, the confirmed scale, on-location research, 170 animal species and deliberate exclusion of Orlando point to a compressed and carefully edited state. Rockstar appears interested in capturing regional contrasts, not completing a checklist of landmarks.
Scale provides the first clue, although it does not tell the whole story. Aaron Garbut, co-head of Rockstar North, confirmed that GTA 6's world will be twice the size of GTA 5's and divided into six regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park. According to Game Informer's coverage, as reported by IGN, the campaign will also take Jason and Lucia through different parts of this territory, making geographical variety part of the narrative journey.
The selection of those regions becomes more meaningful when compared with the real-world research behind them. Rockstar senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries told Game Informer that developers explored Miami, beaches, nightclubs, the Everglades and the Florida Keys, while also touring areas at night with former police officers. That list combines tourist, natural and urban settings, but the revealing detail is the attempt to observe places at different times and under different circumstances rather than merely photographing their facades.
Wildlife shows that this editing of the state also operates on a smaller scale. Rockstar confirmed 170 animal species, according to IGN, including 60 birds, more than 30 land mammals and still-undisclosed numbers of fish and reptiles. Michael Kane, the studio's vice president of dynamic art, connected that variety to urban and rural settings, inland and ocean waters and the wetlands inspiring Leonida; at least one visitable zoo will also be included.
The weather system adds another layer to the same regional logic. Owen Shepherd, Rockstar's vice president of art for lighting and rendering, confirmed tropical storms, hurricanes and dynamic cloud formations capable of moving across the map. According to Game Informer's reporting as relayed by IGN, rain will be localized and persistent enough to leave wet surfaces and puddles behind, allowing one region to experience rainfall while another remains sunny.
The 12 official screenshots supplied by Rockstar to Game Informer give this ambition a more everyday form. They connect the First Chapter biker gang to Ambrosia, show Jason fleeing armed members and present The Thirsty Wolf as one of the group's apparent hangouts. Aaron Garbut also said buildings were designed to feel more realistic inside and out, suggesting that regional identity will not be confined to distant skylines or vegetation.
The most important omission, however, may explain the project better than any number. Jack McPherson told Game Informer that GTA 6 will not include Orlando, a Walt Disney World parody, SeaWorld or the Space Coast, according to GameSpot's coverage. He nevertheless said the game intends to provide the complete Florida experience through other means, following a selection process that considers landscapes, cities, structures, plants, rock formations, design and narrative requirements.
This is where the facts begin to say something none of them communicates alone. If the goal were simply to build a smaller digital Florida, excluding its major theme-park hub would look like an obvious gap; under a compression model, that absence becomes an editorial decision. The six regions would therefore act as containers for selected contrasts: metropolis, islands, wetlands, port, industrial interior and national park, with each reinforced by its wildlife, weather, architecture and conflicts.
That reading also changes what a map twice the size of GTA 5 actually means. Raw area can merely create longer distances, but alleys, rooftops, interiors, biome-specific wildlife and regional rainfall point to several scales of observation working together. What Rockstar described to Game Informer is not just a large territory, but an attempt to make each region feel subject to the environmental, social and visual forces defining that particular place.
The strongest argument against this thesis is straightforward: so far, we are comparing statements of intent and promotional material rather than the complete experience. Having 170 species does not guarantee interesting behavior, six regions do not guarantee meaningful differences, and more realistic interiors do not mean that a large number of buildings will be accessible. Even Orlando's exclusion could reflect production limits rather than a creative philosophy of selection; Rockstar's confirmed numbers still have to function as one coherent system.
The concrete signal to watch is the quality of transitions between regions, not merely the appearance of each isolated destination. When GTA 6 arrives on November 19, the date cited by IGN, players will be able to test whether the campaign truly introduces all six environments, whether wildlife matches its biomes, whether weather changes how places are read and whether interiors and activities give Ambrosia, Grassrivers or Port Gellhorn distinct identities. If those differences are mainly scenic, the careful-compression thesis weakens; if they affect movement, behavior and pacing, it becomes much stronger.
Leonida does not need to contain every symbol associated with Florida to feel complete. It needs to select enough elements for a beach, a wetland, a city and a rural highway to feel like distinct parts of the same fictional state. GTA 6's most interesting ambition may lie in that arrangement: not putting everything on the map, but making every choice justify the space it occupies.
