GTA 6 Uses Geography to Connect the Series' Eras
North Fort Law, Liberty City, and Miami suggest that places may bridge GTA's new story and its past.

GTA 6 appears to be using geography not merely as scenery, but as a bridge between different eras of the series. North Fort Law, Liberty City, Vice City, and real-world Miami form a chain of references that could place Jason and Lucia inside a larger history without relying on nostalgic character appearances. Read together, the launch trailer and the street campaign suggest that locations are doing some of the work usually assigned to characters.
Rockstar released the launch trailer on October 15, just over a month before the game arrives on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. The video again balances Jason and Lucia's relationship with robberies, chases, and larger operations. According to Rockstar's published information, the footage was captured on a base PS5, bringing the presentation closer to the experience promised on current consoles. More importantly for this reading, the trailer adds context about where Jason may have been before entering Leonida's criminal world.
In its analysis of the video, IGN identified a United States Army shirt referring to a training school at North Fort Law. Longtime fans may recognize that name as a military base from the first Grand Theft Auto, where it was located in the fictional state of New Guernsey. IGN considers it possible that the GTA 6 version is in Alderney, the HD universe's interpretation of New Jersey, but the trailer does not confirm that location. The reference itself is concrete, while its position on the map and its exact relationship to Jason remain theories.
That possibility gains another layer because Lucia is presented as being from Liberty City, a region located near Alderney in the geography established by previous games. IGN raises the question of whether Jason could have met Lucia while stationed at the base, but does not present this as confirmed fact. Even without an answer, the speculation shows how one place name can create biographical context before Rockstar directly explains the couple's past. North Fort Law becomes more than a possible callback for veteran fans and starts acting as a coordinate for interpreting GTA 6's central relationship.
At the same time, the campaign is bringing the fictional geography into the real place that inspired it. According to IGN, a convoy of modified vehicles drove through Miami with Leonida license plates, a Lamborghini styled as a Vice City police car, and vehicles inspired by models including the Emerus, Cheetah, Coquette D10, Tempesta, and Manana. The promotion did not reveal a new region or confirm narrative details, but it placed symbols from the game on the streets that inform its world. Rather than simply stating that Vice City represents Miami, the campaign temporarily overlaid the two cities.
A recent IGN retrospective on GTA 4 helps explain why that strategy may matter more than raw map size. The publication recalled that GTA 4's land area was approximately one quarter of GTA San Andreas' physical space, while the 2008 game also offered fewer vehicles, less customization, and fewer side systems. Even so, it immediately became the highest-rated GTA in the series, according to the retrospective, because of its urban density, details, and physics. Liberty City made its mark not by occupying more territory, but by giving identity and consequence to the territory it had.
Taken together, these facts point to three separate functions for geography in GTA 6. It helps suggest Jason's past, connects Lucia to an established city, and turns Miami into a physical stage for Leonida before release. None of these moves confirms a major narrative continuity between the games, but all of them depend on the audience recognizing that GTA's locations carry memories. The series can change protagonists and eras while its cities continue to provide shared reference points.
This approach could also offer a subtler way to speak to longtime fans. A returning character requires explanations about age, history, and compatibility between stories, while a name such as North Fort Law can establish continuity without taking control of Jason and Lucia's plot. The reference can reward those who recognize it while still functioning as a simple part of Jason's military background for newcomers. It is a potentially efficient way to acknowledge the series' history without turning the new game into a catalogue of returns.
The strongest argument against this reading is that it may assign too much intention to isolated references. North Fort Law could simply be a reused name, its possible location in Alderney comes from IGN's interpretation, and the trailer does not confirm that Jason met Lucia during his military service. Likewise, the Miami convoy may be nothing more than a visually appropriate promotional event with no relevance to the narrative's construction. Rockstar has not said that geography will connect different eras of the franchise, so this thesis must remain an analysis rather than a claim.
The clearest signal to watch will be how the game locates Jason's time in the Army. If dialogue, documents, or missions establish North Fort Law in Alderney and connect that period to Lucia's origins in Liberty City, these references will gain a dramatic purpose rather than remaining scattered callbacks. Additional contextual references to previous cities would also support the idea of continuity built through places instead of character appearances. If the name exists only on a shirt and never becomes relevant again, much of this interpretation will lose its foundation.
For now, the most interesting task is not to invent an answer the trailer has not provided. It is to notice that GTA 6 already allows its protagonists' histories to be discussed through bases, states, and cities, while the campaign itself turns Miami into a temporary extension of Leonida. In a series defined by its maps, the strongest connection to the past may not need to walk into the story at all: it may already be beneath Jason and Lucia's feet.
