Dan Houser Skipped GTA 6 Extended Look
Rockstar co-founder says he avoids references that could disrupt his creative process

Dan Houser did not watch GTA 6's Extended Look trailer and does not plan to see it. The Rockstar co-founder explained that he avoids works capable of disrupting his own creative process. Houser made the comments in an interview with Variety that was covered by GameSpot.
Why Houser did not watch the trailer
Houser said he tries to avoid things that could “disrupt me creatively.” He spends much of his time trying to make open-world games and considering innovative ways to market them. For that reason, he believes he does not need to follow what other developers are doing.
According to Houser, the goal is to think about new ways to build those experiences. He does not want to evaluate GTA 6 by comparing it with what he might have done differently. His decision to skip the Extended Look was therefore presented as a personal working method, not an assessment of the trailer.
That approach is not limited to the next GTA. Houser said he no longer plays many open-world games for similar reasons. When he tries those games, he starts analyzing their individual components instead of simply enjoying the experience.
Houser explained that he can identify what he considers a team's strengths and weaknesses in real time. As examples, he mentioned thoughts about animation quality, game design and the meetings that may have led to a particular feature. That process of deconstruction ultimately becomes distracting for him.
A method for avoiding influence
Although he does not consider himself a game designer, Houser described himself as a type of creative director. His focus is on finding ideas that have not been attempted before or drawing inspiration from older media. Avoiding closely related references is part of his attempt to preserve an independent creative direction.
That does not mean Absurd Ventures ignores the rest of the industry. Houser said his company has a team that examines what other companies are doing. The difference is that he personally prefers to stay away from certain works that could influence him too heavily.
Houser said he followed a similar strategy during his years at Rockstar. When the company began developing Red Dead Redemption, he avoided watching more Western films. While formulating the GTA series, he also stayed away from The Sopranos because he believed the show could disrupt his work.
Houser's connection to GTA
Dan Houser left Rockstar in 2020 and now runs Absurd Ventures. Despite his departure, he acknowledged that he will remain associated with the GTA franchise and said there could be no greater compliment. At the same time, he hopes his new company's projects can become successful in their own right.
His brother and fellow Rockstar co-founder, Sam Houser, remains at the company and was involved in the creation of GTA 6. Dan, meanwhile, did not indicate that he has any role in the game's current development. His Extended Look comments deal exclusively with how he manages references while working on his own projects.
What this changes for players
Houser's decision does not change GTA 6's launch, access or platforms. According to the information gathered by GameSpot, the game remains scheduled for November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The statement provides context about the former creative leader's relationship with the series, but it does not reveal any change to Rockstar's project.
It remains unknown whether Houser might watch the Extended Look or play GTA 6 in the future, as he only said he does not plan to see the trailer. The interview also does not detail which other promotional materials he has followed or avoided. As reported by GameSpot from Houser's conversation with Variety, his choice should be understood as a form of creative protection rather than a judgment of GTA 6.
