Anyone who does not already own a compatible console will need to consider a substantial investment to play GTA 6 on November 19. According to a buying guide published by GameSpot, the new systems available for launch range from $500 to $900. The game itself, sold for either $80 or $100, must be purchased on top of that.

GTA 6 will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. GameSpot lists the Xbox Series S as the least expensive new system, currently priced at $500. The guide notes that this is $200 more than the console cost when it launched in 2020.

Elsewhere in the Xbox lineup, a Series X without a disc drive costs $750. The model equipped with a disc drive reaches $800, even though GTA 6 itself will not be offered on a disc. That component may still matter to anyone who uses physical games, DVDs, or Blu-rays on the same machine.

On Sony's side, the least expensive new option cited is the $600 PS5 Digital Edition. The price rises to $900 for a PS5 Pro with a disc drive. GameSpot expects the Pro to provide the best technical and graphical experience among the listed consoles, while gameplay should remain identical across platforms.

Certified refurbished systems provide another way to reduce the hardware cost. Sony offers certified refurbished PS5 consoles starting at $500, while a certified refurbished Xbox Series S costs $400. Those are the prices offered directly by Sony and Microsoft.

GameSpot also points to used consoles sold through retailers and resale platforms, where prices can vary. New and certified refurbished systems include the console, a controller, and the required power cables. A television or monitor is still needed to display the game.

The launch platform options end there in the guide. GTA 6 has not been announced for Nintendo Switch 2 or PC. A PC edition is expected in early 2027, but there is no word about a potential Switch 2 version.

Beyond the hardware, players will have to choose between two editions of GTA 6. The standard edition costs $80, while the Ultimate Edition sells for $100. The game will be digital-only, including when it is purchased from a physical retail store.

Retailers will sell the $80 edition in a box containing a code rather than a disc. GameSpot says the $100 edition appears to be exclusive to digital storefronts. The Ultimate Edition includes cosmetics and access to in-game shops that standard-edition buyers cannot use.

Preorders include the Vintage Vice City Pack and one free month of GTA+. Because this is a digital release, the guide does not see a risk of game units selling out. For context, GameSpot notes that GTA 5 launched at $60 in 2013, which the outlet calculates as roughly $85 after inflation.

An internet connection will be required to install GTA 6. Its reported download size is 201GB, and preloading will begin on November 12. Code-in-a-box copies will also become available in stores that day, but neither option provides early access before November 19.

For players who already own a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, the main immediate expense is the chosen edition of the game. New buyers face a much larger difference depending on the system, model, and whether they choose certified refurbished hardware. A disc drive does not change access to GTA 6, but it may affect the console decision for other media.

Rockstar has not confirmed whether PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass will be required at launch. GameSpot expects that a membership will probably not be needed because GTA 6 will initially be a single-player release without online or multiplayer support. Some expect a new version of GTA Online in early 2027, but the guide does not present that timing as confirmed.

The release date for a PC edition and the possibility of a Switch 2 version also remain open questions. Exact technical performance on each console and future subscription requirements for GTA Online have not been detailed. The launch prices, purchasing options, and access conditions were compiled by GameSpot in its GTA 6 buying guide.
