Mods Leave GTA 5 Launching Only in Windowed Mode

PC Gamer’s experiment piled up modifications until the game’s startup was compromised.

A GTA 5 installation modified daily by PC Gamer has reached the point where it launches only in windowed mode. The problem appeared after the installation of Dynamic Traffic Colours, a mod designed to vary the colors of vehicles around Los Santos. The report applies specifically to the installation used for this experiment, which was already loaded with other modifications.

According to PC Gamer, trying to switch GTA 5 to fullscreen before it finishes loading leaves the game stuck on a black screen. The writer found that CTRL+ALT+DEL was required to escape the situation. To continue testing, the game had to remain in a window.

Dynamic Traffic Colours is intended to increase the variety of colors used by cars driving around Los Santos. During the test, however, most vehicles continued to appear in shades the writer considered ordinary. Cars with more striking color combinations appeared only occasionally, while many vehicles suffered problems as they spawned.

The experiment is part of a series in which PC Gamer installs a new GTA 5 mod every day. Its stated goal is to transform the game into a kind of PC version of GTA 6 or simply push it until it breaks. The startup issue emerged within this repeatedly altered environment, rather than an ordinary installation presented as a baseline.

For GTA 5 players, the episode serves as a warning about piling up modifications, but it does not establish that Dynamic Traffic Colours always causes this problem. The source provides no timeline, update, or fix for the issue. There is also no indication that players without the same combination of mods will be affected.

It remains unclear whether the failure comes directly from Dynamic Traffic Colours, an interaction between multiple mods, or the overall state of this particular installation. The mod’s visual result also remained uncertain because unusually colored cars appeared rarely amid other unstable behavior. PC Gamer reported the case as part of its daily GTA 5 modding series.
