Rockstar Researched Florida First-Hand for GTA 6

Developers visited beaches, clubs, the Everglades, and Keys

Rockstar Games sent developers to Miami and other parts of South Florida to research GTA 6’s setting first-hand. According to senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries, the team visited locations ranging from beaches and nightclubs to the Everglades and the Keys. Developers also rode through areas at night with former police officers.

Humphries described the work in an interview with Game Informer that was subsequently covered by IGN. The executive said the team tries to experience everything it can during this kind of research. The goal was to observe different environments, times of day, and activities across the region that inspires Leonida.

How the Florida research worked

The experiences Humphries listed included nighttime rides with former police officers and visits to strip clubs and nightclubs. The team also spent time on beaches, in the Everglades, and across the Florida Keys. He added that the research went beyond those places, although he did not identify the other locations.

The account indicates that the process was not limited to collecting photographs or visual references. Developers sought direct exposure to places that can operate differently during the day and at night. The source does not say when the trips happened, how long they lasted, or how many developers participated.

Those destinations reflect the geographical range already presented for Leonida. GTA 6 has six identified regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park. Rockstar has shown beaches, urban districts, natural environments, and nightlife in material from the game.

A new interpretation of Vice City

Rockstar has recreated a version of Miami in previous entries, but the last game set in Vice City was GTA: Vice City Stories, released in 2006. GTA 6, in contrast, takes place in the modern day. That gap of roughly two decades helps explain why the studio returned to the real region for new observations.

The research also connects with activities already presented for the game. These include kayaking, street racing, off-road racing, and air boating. Beach and nightclub scenes have also appeared in released GTA 6 material.

That does not mean every location visited by the developers will become an interactive destination. Humphries discussed the research process rather than a direct link between each trip and a gameplay mechanic. The club visits, for example, do not establish which establishments players will be able to enter.

What it means for players

For fans, the account provides more context for how Rockstar is building its contemporary version of Florida. The team gathered references from cities, beaches, wetlands, islands, and nightlife, matching the environmental variety announced for Leonida. The research may inform the setting, but the source does not connect any specific game feature to an individual trip.

The comments also help distinguish real-world inspiration from a literal recreation. Leonida is GTA’s fictional version of Florida, while Vice City is the series’ interpretation of Miami. First-hand research shows attention to the real location, but it does not establish that the map will follow the state’s exact geography.

GTA 6 is scheduled to launch in November for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. The report does not change the launch window, supported platforms, or access to the game. Its significance lies in revealing part of the process Rockstar used to modernize Vice City and expand the setting into the wider state of Leonida.

What remains unknown

It remains unclear which observations from these trips were directly incorporated into the game. Rockstar has not detailed the research’s duration, the additional locations visited, or how the rides with former police officers influenced missions or systems. According to IGN, Humphries shared the details with Game Informer while discussing Rockstar’s research across Miami and South Florida.
