Rockstar Expects Shorter Cycles After GTA 6
Project leads believe the tools, technology and structure built for GTA 6 will allow Rockstar to produce content faster.

Rockstar's development leadership believes the studio's future projects could take less time than GTA 6. Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut say the technology, tools and team built during the current production have created a foundation that can be reused. Their comments were made to Bloomberg and reported by Rock Paper Shotgun.
A foundation for future projects
Hooker, one of three veteran developers who served as heads of development on GTA 6, said he feels confident about that possibility. According to him, the engine, tools and team assembled during the project will allow Rockstar to do things more quickly. His expectation is that the studio can build on this structure instead of repeating the foundational work.
The developer described the strategy as building “more sideways than upwards.” In Hooker's explanation, that approach could help Rockstar create more compelling content without repeating all the structural expansion required by GTA 6. His statement points to extending an existing foundation, not to the confirmation of a specific game.
Aaron Garbut, another lead on the project, reinforced the idea that GTA 6 required fundamental production changes. He said the studio changed a lot of foundational elements during the game's development. Now that the work is complete, Garbut said Rockstar is not going to rip that foundation apart again.
GTA 6's eight-year cycle
Rock Paper Shotgun interprets the comments as an indication that the next major project should not repeat the eight years attributed to GTA 6's development. That period covers the journey from the project's embryonic stages to release. The developers did not, however, provide an estimated production length for any future game.
Rockstar's confidence rests on its investment in technology, processes and organization during GTA 6. In theory, that foundation reduces the need to rebuild essential systems for the following project. Hooker directly connects that continuity with the ability to work faster and create more compelling content.
The Red Dead Redemption 2 precedent
The report also provides a reason to treat the prediction cautiously. During the final stretch of Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar followed similar logic by focusing much of the studio on completing that game. This meant assigning fewer resources to developing GTA 6 at the same time.
According to Bloomberg's account as presented by Rock Paper Shotgun, Red Dead Redemption 2's ambitions grew until Nelson needed to mobilize most of Rockstar, including senior leadership. The decision pushed GTA 6 back by several years, but the expectation was that everything built during that period would pay off once the studio reached the next GTA. Technology produced for the western was therefore also viewed as a foundation for the following project.
That precedent does not invalidate Rockstar's current confidence, but it shows that technical gains do not automatically create short production cycles. GTA 6 still went through what the report describes as a very long development process despite benefiting from earlier work. The size and level of detail pursued by each project can continue to affect how long development takes.
What this means for players
For fans, the statement raises the possibility of shorter waits between future Rockstar releases. It also suggests that systems, tools and knowledge developed for GTA 6 could continue producing content instead of being discarded. For now, though, this is an expectation from the development leadership rather than a dated commitment.
There is also no confirmation that Rockstar's next project will be GTA 7. The source provides no platforms, format, scale, release window or indication of when another production could be revealed. The only concrete position is that Rockstar considers its current structure better suited to faster work after GTA 6.
What remains unknown
The main question is whether Rockstar can turn this technical foundation into a measurable reduction in its next development cycle. It also remains unclear how much time could be saved and whether new ambitions will once again expand the scope of production. As reported by Rock Paper Shotgun from Bloomberg's article, the confidence is real, but it does not yet come with a public timetable.
