SNL Pits GTA 6's Jason Against Link

The six-minute skit compared November's major releases and drew fan criticism over its gaming stereotypes.

Saturday Night Live put GTA 6's Jason Duval face-to-face with Link in a Weekend Update skit. The parody featured live-action versions of the two protagonists arguing over who had the better game. According to IGN, the six-minute segment appeared during the show's 52nd season.

Jason and Link at the desk

Marcello Hernández played Jason, while Mikey Day took the role of Link. They joined Weekend Update hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che at the desk. Their argument was built around two major releases scheduled for November 2026.

The Grand Theft Auto references were mostly limited to stealing cars and carrying an RPG. Jason's costume combined a tropical button-up shirt with a bloody bandage. In IGN's assessment, the result looked more like a last-minute Halloween costume than a detailed recreation of the character.

Link's appearance received a warmer response because of its resemblance to the outfit associated with the Ocarina of Time remake. The costume included specific tunic details, elf ears, and a wig. His jokes, however, mostly revolved around puzzles and his insistence that the tunic was not a dress.

How fans responded

The response highlighted by IGN was largely negative. One fan described the sketch as rough and said it repeated jokes that had circulated for roughly 20 years. Another questioned whether its Zelda jokes were essentially the same ones audiences had heard since 2000.

Some criticism also focused on Colin Jost's opening joke, which connected not knowing much about gaming with having sex. Other comments objected to the lack of specificity and the reliance on dated stereotypes about players. The segment's length was another target for viewers who felt it stretched the same ideas too far.

Not every response was completely negative. One comment cited by IGN found the skit funny but questioned how the show could parody a GTA 6 character whom audiences barely know. The observation points to a challenge within the premise itself: Jason's game has not launched yet.

The episode was hosted by Verity star Dakota Johnson and featured Turnstile as the musical guest. Taylor Swift also made a surprise cameo. Although SNL occasionally includes gaming references, the joint appearance of Jason and Link was presented as an unexpected combination.

The release context

The matchup grew out of the November 2026 release calendar. According to IGN, games of different sizes have mostly moved away from the month to avoid competing for attention with GTA 6. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake remained the biggest exception.

The releases are close together, but their platforms reduce the amount of direct competition. The Ocarina of Time remake is scheduled for November 5 on Nintendo Switch 2. GTA 6 follows on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with no Nintendo console version mentioned by the source.

What this changes for players

The skit does not change GTA 6's release date, platforms, or access conditions. Its significance comes from bringing Jason and Rockstar's upcoming release into a long-running comedy show outside traditional gaming channels. At the same time, the criticism shows how broader exposure can reduce GTA to familiar references such as stolen cars and weapons when the series is quickly explained to another audience.

What remains unknown

The selected reactions cannot measure how SNL's wider audience received the skit or whether negative sentiment prevailed beyond the comments cited. It also remains unclear how viewers will perceive Jason after GTA 6 is available and provides more context for the character. For now, it stands as an early and divisive parody reported by IGN a little more than a month before both releases.
