GTA 6 Trailer Expands on Jason’s Military Past

IGN identifies Army references, tactical operations, heists, and new vehicles in the footage.

The GTA 6 launch trailer adds new clues about Jason’s military past and the kind of criminal he may become. In its analysis of the footage, IGN identified references to a unit called the Marauders, a combat training school, and operations conducted with tactical equipment. The video also shows Lucia taking part in large-scale confrontations, alongside heists, chases, and new vehicles.

Jason is shown wearing a United States Army T-shirt that references a training school in North Fort Law. According to IGN, longtime fans may recognize that name as the military base featured in the original Grand Theft Auto. That game placed the base in the state of New Guernsey, but the analysis considers whether the GTA 6 reference could point to Alderney, the HD universe’s version of New Jersey.

Alderney’s proximity to the State of Liberty also raises a question about the couple’s history. Because Lucia comes from Liberty City, Jason may have met her while stationed at the base. The trailer does not confirm such a meeting or establish where this version of North Fort Law is located. For now, it is a possibility based on the geographical connections suggested by the series.

The word “Marauder” is another detail highlighted on Jason’s clothing. It matches the skull-and-parachute tattoo previously seen on his arm, potentially identifying the unit in which he served. IGN notes that the reference may point to Merrill’s Marauders, a 1940s special forces group whose modern equivalent is the 75th Ranger Regiment. That supports the theory that Jason was a ranger, although the trailer does not confirm his precise military role.

Jason directly discusses his departure from the Army during the opening of the video. He says he got into trouble while serving, did not leave on the best terms, and now struggles to obtain loans. The statement connects his military history with the financial situation he faces at the beginning of the story. It also gives him a tangible motive for turning to crime, although the trailer does not explain the incident that ended his career.

His experience appears to shape how he operates. One scene shows Jason wading through water in special forces-style infiltration equipment, with night-vision goggles and a suppressed assault rifle. Two other men accompany him, and the group appears to have arrived by boat. An unusual reptile in the shot led IGN to question whether this could be a flashback to his military service or an operation set in Leonida’s wetlands.

Other images reinforce Jason’s professional behavior in combat. He is shown aboard a helicopter while wearing a bulletproof vest, and another shot has him confidently leaving an aircraft and checking the chambered round in his rifle. A dog is also present on the helicopter, raising the possibility that it is either a pet or a working animal used during operations. The trailer does not demonstrate any mechanic for controlling or directing it.

Lucia is also shown adopting tactical methods despite not having Jason’s stated training background. She wears black equipment and uses a Shrewsbury rotary grenade launcher against pursuing police vehicles. Lucia fires while hanging from the side of a cargo net. Soon afterward, a helicopter carries a similar load beside a skyscraper, suggesting that the shots may come from the same mission.

The load’s collision with the building sends hundreds of glass fragments through the air. IGN says the damage is more detailed than environmental destruction previously seen in the series, but it stops short of calling this proof of a broad demolition system. The footage may show a scripted event designed for one specific mission rather than buildings that can be destroyed across the map. That distinction matters for players expecting destruction technology comparable to that of other franchises.

The scale of the missions is also visible when Lucia leaps from a car toward a commercial airliner. IGN connects the moment with a scene from the second trailer in which she fights inside an aircraft’s hold as its landing gear deploys. If that reading is correct, the two clips show different parts of the same operation. The footage does not establish how the mission begins or how much control players will have during these sequences.

A bank robbery provides further clues about the structure of criminal operations. Its vault previously appeared in an image debuted by IGN, complete with burning banknotes and Lucia wearing her hair in a ponytail. In the trailer, she is accompanied by an unidentified person, while another shot shows armed people disguised as construction workers. This points to the use of crews, but it does not reveal whether they are fixed story characters or hired NPCs similar to GTA 5’s heist teams.

The trailer also contains a possible satire of the cryptocurrency market. A plane flies over Vice City’s beach with “DacityCoin” displayed on its side while someone on the wing releases bright pink smoke. IGN theorizes that Jason and Lucia could become involved in a scam built around a bogus digital currency, with the aerial stunt serving as advertising. The branding is visible in the footage, but its role in the story remains unconfirmed.

For players, the trailer suggests variety across tactical operations, major heists, and vehicle-based activities. It includes street racing previously seen in the extended look, a chase involving a lime-green supercar, and a brief appearance by a new Invetero Coquette with turquoise-and-pink paint. On the water, Jason and Cal work on a boat called the Shasa at Brian’s Marina, which appears to represent Jason’s working life near the start of the story. A Globe Oil truck, connecting GTA 6 with a company used in earlier games, can also be seen in the background.

What remains unclear is how much of the footage represents freely available systems and how much belongs to scripted missions. The trailer does not confirm that Jason was a ranger, that the dog has a gameplay function, that widespread environmental destruction is possible, or that players can hire crews. It also does not establish whether the beach-view apartment occupied by Jason and Lucia will become a property acquired through story progression. According to IGN, the details expand the picture of GTA 6’s protagonists and criminal operations, but many of the connections remain interpretations rather than confirmed mechanics.
