AI Clones Could Cut Your Wait for GTA 6 on PC
A former Rockstar director believes the sales risk could bring the PS5 and PC releases closer together.

Unofficial clones produced with artificial intelligence could shorten the wait for GTA 6 on PC, according to former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij. He believes the threat of those versions affecting sales could push Rockstar and Take-Two to bring the PS5 and PC releases closer together. He presented that assessment in an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun.
The risk raised by Vermeij
GTA 6 will launch on November 19, and Vermeij considers it possible that someone will try to convert the PS5 version to PC with AI tools. Such a copy would be inferior to Rockstar's official work, in his view, yet it could still hurt sales. Faced with that prospect, the former director said he would not be surprised to see an effort to move the releases a little closer together.
Vermeij framed his statement as a possibility rather than information from inside Rockstar. He left the company in 2009 and clearly acknowledged that he does not know what it is currently thinking. The interview consequently provides no PC release window and does not confirm any change to GTA 6's schedule.
What AI might be able to do
Vermeij believes current tools are probably capable of producing some form of GTA 6 conversion for PC. The process would still take many hours and could consume tens of thousands of dollars in tokens. Even at that cost, he expects people to try because the game is GTA.
The former director described a scenario in which AI processes the PS5 version and converts it to run on PC. He expects an outcome below the standard of an official release, featuring brute-force code with little understanding of the original structure. The commercial concern would come from an unauthorized alternative appearing during the gap between releases.
Rock Paper Shotgun also pointed to signs of interest in applying AI tools to GTA 6 material. The outlet referenced an Ars Technica report about attempts to process footage from the PS5 trailer through a more powerful graphics card and Nvidia's DLSS 5. That example concerns promotional footage, while Vermeij's prediction about a complete conversion remains hypothetical.
GTA has reversed its platform priorities before
Vermeij closely followed the original GTA's production during the 1990s, although he did not work directly on GTA 1 or GTA 2. According to him, the game was developed on PC while an external company in Dundee handled the PlayStation edition. PC received technical priority even though the PlayStation versions sold much better.
He recalled that the first GTA's textures were reduced from 256 colors to 16 during the PlayStation adaptation. The change prompted an angry reaction from artists on the team, according to his account. The episode illustrates how the relationship between PC and consoles was already creating friction within the series' development.
Rockstar reversed that process with GTA 3 and began developing the console versions first, Vermeij said. He explained that focusing on one version at a time makes development easier. Other major releases often pursue simultaneous launches to concentrate spending into a single marketing campaign, while GTA's scale allows it to follow a different strategy.
What this changes for PC players
For PC players, the statement raises the possibility of a shorter gap after GTA 6 debuts on PS5. It supplies no date, approximate timeframe, or guarantee that Rockstar is accelerating the PC version. For now, its practical effect concerns the expectation that AI could disrupt a release strategy the series has followed for decades.
Rock Paper Shotgun cites rumors placing the PC edition in early 2027. That window remains unconfirmed within the report, and Vermeij's comments do not replace an announcement from Rockstar. His prediction outlines a possible commercial reason to accelerate the port without indicating how much time could be removed from the wait.
What remains unknown
Rockstar and Take-Two did not provide a plan in the published material for responding to potential AI-generated conversions. It also remains unclear whether these tools could produce a functional version of a game on this scale or whether such a release would actually affect sales. Vermeij believes Take-Two could deploy its lawyers, though he acknowledges that protecting games from this form of copying has become a major question for the industry.
The Rock Paper Shotgun interview places GTA 6 at the center of a change that could affect the traditional distance between console and PC launches. Vermeij sees financial risks for small studios and major companies, while acknowledging that complex games may produce poor results when converted through AI. The outcome will depend on Rockstar's plans, the actual capabilities of these tools, and any measures Take-Two chooses to pursue.
