Digital Foundry Highlights GTA 6's Visual Leap

Experts analyzed 48,242 frames and found a stable 30 FPS target

Digital Foundry experts consider GTA 6 one of the most advanced examples of real-time rendering shown to date. According to GameSpot, their analysis of the first major gameplay presentation also found an apparently consistent 30 FPS target. The assessment combines praise for the visuals with technical measurements of the footage that was shown.

Digital Foundry's Oliver Mackenzie and Richard Leadbetter examined the game's visual presentation. Mackenzie went as far as calling it the most impressive example of real-time game rendering he has ever seen. That statement is an expert assessment rather than an official specification announced by Rockstar.

Character rendering was among the elements highlighted by the pair. The experts specifically praised the hair physics and skin detail applied to both the protagonists and numerous NPCs. In their analysis, that level of detail helps support the impression of a visually ambitious open world.

The use of ray tracing also received praise, but not because it replaces every older rendering method. According to the report, Rockstar appears to use it where it can produce the greatest visual impact while retaining conventional techniques elsewhere. This combination would balance image fidelity and performance instead of relying exclusively on more demanding solutions.

Performance was evaluated across all 48,242 frames from the presentation. Digital Foundry identified a 30 FPS render and found few drops during its analysis, suggesting that the target was maintained consistently in the showcased footage. This does not confirm how the final version will perform, but it provides a concrete measurement of the demonstration.

Based on the team's calculations, the gameplay was rendered at a native 1440p and then upscaled to 4K. The analysis says the process did not use a modern upscaling technique, resulting in a slightly soft image. The experts believe this could improve before launch, but they did not claim that a change is already planned.

Digital Foundry also reaffirmed that it does not expect a 60 FPS performance mode on current-generation consoles, even with significant cuts to the visual presentation. The team identifies the CPU as the biggest obstacle because of the world's extensive simulation and the need to halve the time available to render each frame. Its expectations for PlayStation 5 Pro involve improved ray-traced effects or higher resolution targets, while a more powerful future PC could produce different results.

For console players, the analysis reinforces expectations of a visually focused 30 FPS experience, but it is not an official confirmation of the available graphics modes. The source does not establish final settings, the definitive resolution, or whether Rockstar will provide performance alternatives at launch. GameSpot reported the technical findings and visual praise based on Digital Foundry's analysis.
