GTA 6 Cuts Groceries but Keeps Refueling

Rockstar simplified a household mechanic while keeping vehicle refueling as a strategic consideration.

GTA 6 once featured a system that allowed Jason and Lucia to buy groceries and restock their refrigerator at home. Rockstar abandoned the mechanic because it made the game too complicated, according to comments Rob Nelson gave Famitsu and GameSpot later covered. The studio has kept another lifelike idea, however: cars will need fuel or an electric charge.

Nelson explained that Rockstar experimented with stores where groceries could be purchased, taken home, and placed in the fridge. The team went as far as establishing specifications for that system during development. According to him, the mechanic had to be simplified because it did not fit the studio’s desired balance between realism and ease of play.

His comments also clarify that this was more than an idea mentioned during an informal discussion. It became a development experiment with a planned structure for stores and refrigerator restocking. The available summary does not say how long Rockstar worked on the mechanic or at what stage of production it was removed.

Vehicle refueling took a different path. Content creator TGG, who visited Rockstar and saw GTA 6 in action, reported that players can stop at gas stations to refuel, recharge electric vehicles, and repair cars. He said refueling is not very expensive and takes approximately ten seconds, with its own animation.

TGG added that Nelson appeared aware that this decision could divide players. Even so, Rockstar is reportedly keeping the system because it can introduce a strategic consideration. Before committing a robbery, for example, players will want to check the getaway vehicle’s fuel level to avoid trouble during the escape.

For players, the practical difference is that cars will no longer behave like resources with seemingly unlimited range, as they do by default in GTA 5. Preparing for an activity may involve checking the vehicle’s condition, its remaining fuel, and whether a stop at a station is necessary. At the same time, cutting grocery shopping indicates that Rockstar does not intend to turn every everyday task into a mandatory playable routine.

The source also connects the former grocery system to physical mechanics attributed to GTA 6, including gaining weight based on food consumption and using gyms to build muscle. GameSpot presents that connection as a presumption, however, rather than an explanation directly provided by Nelson. It is therefore not confirmed that grocery shopping was designed specifically to support the body and weight system.

Important questions about refueling remain unanswered. The material does not reveal how long a tank will last, how consumption will be displayed, whether every vehicle follows the same rules, or if players can disable the mechanic. It also does not detail how gas stations, electric charging points, and vehicle repairs will be distributed across Leonida.

GTA 6 is scheduled for November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, according to the source summary. Until then, the contrast between the discarded refrigerator mechanic and the retained fuel system offers a direct example of where Rockstar is drawing its line on realism. GameSpot reported the information based on Nelson’s Famitsu interview and TGG’s account of his visit to the studio.
