GTA 6 Will Limit Character Swaps in Some Missions
Rob Nelson says the story will determine when players can switch between Jason and Lucia.

Switching between Jason and Lucia in GTA 6 will not always be under the player’s control. According to a PC Gamer report published on September 1, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said the ability to alternate between the protagonists will depend on the mission and the current point in the story. Some sections will allow free swapping, while others will restrict the system or keep the action tied to one character’s perspective.
Nelson discussed the feature in an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu, translated and reported by GamesRadar+, according to PC Gamer. He explained that the campaign will include moments when players cannot leave a particular protagonist because of a narrative reason. Other missions will allow players to switch as often as they want, in an approach Nelson compared to the system used in GTA 5.
One early-game mission was changed during development. Nelson said players were originally able to switch between Jason and Lucia during that sequence, but the team decided it made more sense for Jason to take the lead because of his military background. The report does not identify the mission or explain exactly when switching becomes unavailable.
Other sequences will change protagonists automatically. Nelson used the bank robbery escape shown in the Extended Look as an example: after Jason fires at the police from the back seat, control moves to Lucia in the getaway car’s driver seat. In that situation, the transition follows the mission’s planned staging instead of being manually triggered by the player.
The attack sequence shown at the end of the Extended Look will work differently. According to Nelson, that mission will let players switch freely between Jason and Lucia, although the presentation did not demonstrate the feature in action. The example confirms that GTA 6 missions can apply different rules to the duo rather than using one switching format throughout the entire campaign.
Until now, the Extended Look presented through Netflix had not made the level of player control during missions entirely clear. The camera pulled away from Lucia and traveled back down to Jason several miles away, but there was little protagonist swapping during the action scenes. Outside missions, a Dazed preview had already indicated that players will be able to switch freely between the two characters, PC Gamer noted.
For players, Nelson’s explanation means switching freedom will depend on context: open exploration and certain missions may offer a choice, while specific story moments will determine the controlled character. It remains unclear how many missions will allow unrestricted swapping, how many will block it, or whether the game will visibly indicate which rule is active. The details were reported by PC Gamer based on Nelson’s Famitsu interview and the translation covered by GamesRadar+.
