Mod Adds 235 Destructible Cameras to GTA 5

A new mod adds 235 destructible Flock cameras to the world of GTA 5. Called GTALPR, the project lets players target the devices with weapons, vehicles and even tanks. The cameras also work as license plate readers in the game instead of serving only as decorative props.

GTALPR stands for Grand Theft Automated License Plate Reader. The mod was created by Morry and distributes the devices across Los Santos. The number of cameras placed on the map is one of the central elements of the experience.

When players drive past one of the cameras, it can take their picture. Those images can be saved and formatted for social media or a personal collection. This gives the devices a purpose beyond creating new targets around the map.

The cameras can also report the player's location to the police. According to PC Gamer, that alert may sometimes happen even when no laws are being broken. The system can therefore turn an apparently uneventful drive into an encounter with the Los Santos authorities.

Players who want to eliminate the devices have several options. The mod allows the cameras to be shot, smashed or struck with cars, tanks and shotguns. That freedom makes use of the destructive tools GTA 5 already puts in the player's hands.

Every destroyed camera drops a bundle of components. Those materials can be sold for $600 per eliminated device. Taking down the license plate readers consequently creates another way to earn money within the game.

GTALPR also includes built-in speedrun functionality. A statistics screen tracks the number of cameras destroyed and the player's fastest times. The timed challenges cover the destruction of 10, 50 or all 235 cameras.

The project is not limited to the devices placed by its creator. Players can also position their own cameras inside the game. Those cameras can save snapshots of activities taking place around Los Santos.

Morry presented the mod as criticism of surveillance conducted by private cameras in the United States. In a statement quoted by PC Gamer, the creator described Flock as a scourge on the country. That position explains why the readers appear as both working systems and destructible targets.

The creator said the company operates more than 100,000 cameras across the United States and is worth $8 billion. He also stated that the mod's 235 units represent one tenth of the number currently installed in Los Angeles County. Morry connected that comparison to Los Santos, the fictional city where GTA 5 takes place.

For players, the mod adds a map-wide activity, cash rewards, photo features and timed challenges. The project is available through GitHub, according to PC Gamer. The source does not specify its price, installation requirements or compatible versions of GTA 5.

It also remains unclear whether Morry plans to expand the camera count or update GTALPR's features. The creator warned that destroying real equipment is illegal and will not provide the $600 reward offered by the mod. PC Gamer reported the details about the project and its functionality.
