GTA 6 Romance Mechanic Sparks Cheating Debate
Partners are criticizing the mechanic online, but Rockstar says deepening Jason and Lucia’s relationship will be optional.

The relationship mechanic between Jason and Lucia in GTA 6 has opened an unexpected discussion on social media. According to IGN, partners of players have posted videos arguing that nurturing the virtual romance could count as cheating and even justify ending a relationship. The reaction grew after the GTA 6 Extended Look went live on August 27.
In one post cited by IGN, a TikTok creator said she would not allow her fiancé to play GTA 6. She referred to maintaining contact with Lucia, taking her on dates, and developing the relationship during the game. Other creators went further and directly labeled the experience a form of cheating.
The discussion stems from details shared by the press and Rockstar about the protagonists’ relationship. Players will be able to send Jason and Lucia on dates, exchange messages, commit crimes together, and have them hold hands. These activities can nurture their bond, but they have not been presented as mandatory for progressing through the entire game.
There has also been pushback against the idea that controlling a fictional romance is equivalent to cheating on someone outside the game. Users noted that series such as The Sims have allowed people to create relationships, families, and intimate situations for years. For this group, choices involving virtual characters remain part of fiction and roleplay.
For people planning to play GTA 6, the most important point is that deepening the romance will be optional. Rockstar explained that Jason and Lucia want a relationship at the beginning of the story, but players must actively pursue it. If they do not, the protagonists will not be as deeply in love, although they will still support each other when it matters. Players who invest in the couple may find more content connected to that dynamic.
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told IGN that bringing the protagonists together can make players feel responsible for their relationship. According to the developer, playing as Jason and Lucia together works during crimes and police chases as well as quieter moments, such as entering a car or waiting for the other person. Nelson described the experience as taking care of them as a unit, if that style of roleplay interests the player.
An important part of the debate, however, remains unconfirmed. Rockstar has not clarified whether players can initiate sex scenes between Jason and Lucia outside scripted story moments or whether such scenes would depend on relationship progression. The trailers imply that sexual scenes exist, but that does not confirm a freely initiated activity. Claims that GTA 6 will require players to engage in sex are therefore not supported by the available information.
Nelson acknowledged that physical intimacy is a significant part of a relationship and said the team is trying to implement it in a way that feels right. He explained that Rockstar must test, revise, and iterate on ideas until it finds the right result. His comment confirms that the subject has been considered during development, but it does not define a specific mechanic. It also does not reveal how any relevant scenes will be presented or controlled.
The series has handled relationships in other ways before: GTA 4 allowed players to develop Niko’s romances, while GTA: San Andreas had an interactive sex minigame removed before release, as the report recalls. For GTA 6, what has been established is the optional nature of deepening Jason and Lucia’s relationship, not the more extreme conclusions circulating online. The discussion and the limits of what has been confirmed were reported by IGN.
