Stephen Root Confirms Role in GTA 6

Stephen Root has confirmed that he is involved in GTA 6, making him the first actor publicly known through a direct statement. Asked by AP News about fan speculation, he replied: “Yeah, you're gonna see me in that.” The confirmation was reported by Eurogamer.

Root’s answer confirms his involvement in the next Grand Theft Auto, but it does not identify his role. Eurogamer places his participation within the voice cast of GTA 6. Rockstar Games has so far said little about who is voicing the game’s characters.

Root was asked after fans spent time investigating possible cast members following the first trailer. According to Eurogamer, a recurring theory suggested that he was involved in the game. The actor’s own statement now confirms that part of the speculation, but not the theories about his character.

The actor also mentioned November 19 while discussing the release. “It's coming out November 19th, is the latest I know of,” Root said. His comment reflects the schedule known to him rather than introducing a new announcement from Rockstar.

Root believes people began recognizing his involvement during an earlier GTA 6 rollout. He said his character appeared in that material and that many people recognized his voice from King of the Hill. In the actor’s view, that was when the secret was divulged.

In addition to King of the Hill, Root has voice credits in productions such as Rick and Morty. His résumé also includes the film Get Out and the series Barry, as well as a role he reprised in the Finding Nemo video game. That background helps explain why his voice attracted attention from fans.

Root expressed clear enthusiasm when discussing his involvement in the project. “I am so happy to be involved with it,” the actor said. He also described GTA 6 as an amazing thing to look at.

The confirmation does not answer the biggest question about his work. Root did not say which character he plays or describe the size of his role. He also did not explain whether his contribution extends beyond voice work.

The main theory cited by Eurogamer links Root to Brian Heder, but that connection remains unconfirmed. Rockstar describes Brian as a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling. The character still moves product through his boat yard and lives with his third wife, Lori.

Brian and Lori are shown going out for drinks with Lucia and Jason in the GTA 6 Extended Look. That appearance made Brian one of the names fans considered while trying to identify Root’s voice. Even so, neither the actor nor Rockstar has confirmed that the two are connected.

The statement provides the first public identification of an actor involved in the cast, but it does not change the game’s price, platforms or access. It also reveals no new mechanics, missions or story details. For fans, the news means a familiar name can finally be attached to the production of GTA 6.

It remains unknown which character Root plays, how large his part will be and when Rockstar will formally present the voice cast. The possible connection to Brian Heder remains a fan theory. Confirmation of that role would still require a direct statement from the actor or Rockstar.
