GTA 6 Romance Enters Debate Over Cheating
A YouGov poll found that 6% of British adults consider video game relationships a form of cheating.

A poll of 4,000 British adults has placed video game relationships at the center of a debate about cheating. Around 6% of respondents said they would consider this kind of interaction a form of infidelity, while another 19% would not call it cheating but still would not be comfortable with it. IGN connected those findings to the optional relationship system involving Jason and Lucia in GTA 6.
YouGov conducted the poll in September and asked about dating inside video games generally, not GTA 6 specifically. That distinction matters because the results do not directly measure the public’s reaction to Rockstar’s game. GTA 6 enters the discussion because its central relationship is designed to respond to the player’s choices and attention.
The answers also showed differences between men and women. Among the men surveyed, 4% described video game relationships as cheating, compared with 7% of women. Another 13% of men and 24% of women said it was not cheating but maintained that they would not be okay with it.
GTA 6 is due in November and follows dual protagonists Jason and Lucia. According to IGN, their Bonnie and Clyde-style relationship sits at the heart of the story, but players can decide how deeply they want to engage with that part of the experience. Rockstar has said the relationship can blossom or wilt based partly on how quickly messages are answered through the in-game phones.
The launch trailer featured three intimate scenes involving the couple, including moments in the shower. Previews cited by IGN indicate that Jason and Lucia can kiss at the touch of a button and walk around while holding hands. Released screenshots also suggest beach dates and shopping trips.
Despite that level of interaction, Rockstar says pursuing the romance will not be mandatory. Jason and Lucia begin the game wanting a relationship, but the player must actively invest in bringing them closer. If that does not happen, they will not be as deeply in love, although they will continue to support each other when it matters.
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told IGN that bringing the protagonists together can make the player feel responsible for their relationship. He said controlling Jason and Lucia as a unit during escapes, car rides or moments spent waiting creates a feeling of taking care of them. Nelson also acknowledged that the team discovered and refined this dynamic during development rather than having it completely defined from the beginning.
The possibility of GTA 6 interactions being treated as “cheating” had already surfaced on social media. In August, IGN reported on posts from people who considered the mechanic detailed enough to justify arguments or even breakups. Some TikTok users went as far as saying that they would not allow their partners to play the game.
The BBC’s presentation of the YouGov poll prompted another wave of criticism toward the idea of treating virtual interactions as infidelity. Players responded that game characters are not real and compared the discussion to treating crimes committed in other games as real-world acts. The reactions suggest that the disagreement is less about a universal rule and more about boundaries established within individual relationships.
Some responses also pointed to The Sims as evidence that simulated relationships have existed in games for years. That series lets players create alternative domestic lives, marry characters, have children, pursue careers and decorate homes. For those players, focusing the concern on GTA 6 overlooks decades of role-playing built around virtual relationships.
For GTA 6 players, the practical takeaway is that Jason and Lucia’s relationship can receive as much or as little attention as they choose to give it. Avoiding the romance does not appear to remove their narrative partnership, as the two will still have each other’s backs. Investing in the couple may instead provide more interactions and let players experience a closer version of their bond.
It remains unclear how many romantic activities will be available, what consequences individual choices will carry or how extensively the messaging system will affect the story. The source also does not specify whether particular scenes, missions or rewards will depend on Jason and Lucia’s level of closeness. The poll results, public reactions and details about the relationship system were reported by IGN.
